EU holds forest data seminar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The European Union's Forest Inventory and
\nMonitoring Project (FIMP-EU), in cooperation with the Ministry of
\nForestry and Plantations' Directorate General of Inventory and
\nForest Land Use, is holding a four-day conference on data
\nmanagement using remote sensing and Geographical Information
\nSystems (GIS) for tropical forest land inventories.<\/p>\n
Minister of Forestry and Plantations Muslimin Nasution, in his
\nspeech read by Director General of Inventory and Forest Land Use
\nSoebagyo Hadisepoetro, said at the opening of the conference on
\nMonday that the government would continue developing the use of
\nremote sensing and GIS because the two systems could provide
\naccurate and up-to-date data and information on the country's
\nforest resources.<\/p>\n
"Demands for the availability and accessibility of tropical
\nforest data and information are increasing in line with community
\nconcerns on the vital role of tropical forests. In Indonesia,
\nreliable forest information is needed because it will be the
\nbasis of government policies on forest management," Muslimin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The conference, attended by scientists, businesspeople, and
\npractitioners from 16 countries, ends on Thursday. (gis)<\/p>",
