EU Commission urges cotton dumping duties<\/p>\n
BRUSSELS (Reuters): The European Union's executive body said
\nyesterday it proposed definitive anti-dumping duties averaging 12
\npercent on imports of unbleached cotton fabrics from five
\ncountries, including Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The controversial proposal to impose the duties on China,
\nEgypt, India, Indonesia and Pakistan was adopted without
\ndiscussion at the European Commission's weekly meeting, EU
\nofficials said.<\/p>\n
Turkey, target of existing anti-dumping duties, was spared
\nunder the Commission's new proposal.<\/p>\n
Indonesia and several countries have lodged a formal protest
\nagainst the EU's anti-dumping proposal.<\/p>\n
Egypt's government and private businessmen have threatened to
\ncut their trade with some European countries if the European
\nUnion (EU) imposes anti-dumping duties on Egyptian unbleached
\ncotton exports.<\/p>\n
The proposal calls for definitive anti-dumping duties of 10.9
\npercent on unbleached cotton fabrics from China, 18.5 percent
\nfrom Egypt, 16.1 percent from India, 13.7 percent from Indonesia
\nand 11.1 percent from Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The proposal is the latest skirmish in a battle over
\nunbleached cotton imports which has angered the exporting
\ncountries and split the 15-nation EU.<\/p>\n
EU ministers must decide by October 9 whether to approve the
\nsanctions. It is questionable whether the measure will win the
\nmajority support required for it to take effect.<\/p>",
