Eros to plug on with candidacy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI
\nPerjuangan) executive Eros Djarot affirmed his commitment to go
\nahead with his plan to contend for the party leadership despite
\nhaving his candidacy rejected by the South Jakarta party branch.<\/p>\n
"The party's South Jakarta branch has no authority to prevent
\nme from contending. I believe it is an attempt by certain figures
\nto block me from competing against Megawati," he said during a
\nmedia briefing here on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He would not identify who he thought was sabotaging his
\nattempt but insisted that incumbent Megawati Soekarnoputri was
\nnot among the saboteurs.<\/p>\n
The party's South Jakarta branch, in its meeting on Tuesday
\nevening, blocked Eros, whose membership in the party is
\nregistered in the mayoralty, from running in the leadership race
\nin the upcoming PDI Perjuangan congress in Semarang, Central
\nJava, later this month.<\/p>\n
PDI Perjuangan Deputy Secretary-General Haryanto Taslam, who
\naccompanied Eros in the briefing, urged the party's executive
\nboard to take strict measures against the undemocratic way it was
\nblocking the candidacy of alternative nominees.<\/p>\n
"Democracy should be upheld in the party. The more candidates
\nthat contend the election the more democratic the congress will
\nbe. I'm sure that Megawati will win a majority of votes in the
\nelection, but let the competition proceed democratically," he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, chairman of the Party's branch in Makassar, South
\nSulawesi, Nadham Yusuf called on Megawati to annul the South
\nJakarta branch meeting's decision.<\/p>\n
"We should all respect democracy in our own home before the
