        "content": "<p>Environmental information<\/p>\n<p>With regard to Suwiryo Ismail's discussion on the very<br>\nimportant subject of public access to environmental information<br>\nwhich appeared in The Jakarta Post, Nov. 6, 1997, page four, I<br>\nfeel that it's necessary to elaborate on one aspect of the<br>\narticle.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ismail states that the government has had a tendency to<br>\nblock access to environmental information for journalists<br>\ncovering stories \"such as that of Freeport in Irian Jaya\".<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the government, through the Pollution Control Agency<br>\n(BAPEDAL), has been the biggest proponent of the independent<br>\nenvironmental and social audit process which Freeport recently<br>\nconcluded. The information from both the environmental and social<br>\naudit reports were made public under the guidance of BAPEDAL and<br>\nare available to anyone who requests them.<\/p>\n<p>Both studies are extremely comprehensive and detailed.<\/p>\n<p>Freeport Indonesia will continue to conduct internal<br>\nenvironmental audits every year, and external independent<br>\nenvironmental audits every three years as a part of our ongoing<br>\ncommitment to the BAPEDAL program.<\/p>\n<p>To suggest that the government or Freeport Indonesia has not<br>\nbeen forthcoming with environmental information over the past few<br>\nyears is not accurate.<\/p>\n<p>EDWARD J.
