Environmental expo a success<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Participants and visitors to the Environment
\nExpo 1997, which concluded yesterday, agreed the event was
\nbeneficial and should be held again soon.<\/p>\n
Opened last Thursday by the State Minister for Environment
\nSarwono Kusumaatmadja and coinciding with Environment Day, the
\nexhibition featured 120 non-governmental organizations,
\ngovernment agencies, and state and private industries. Seminars,
\ngames and other related activities were also held at the Jakarta
\nHilton Convention Center.<\/p>\n
A number of students and housewives visiting the expo told The
\nJakarta Post the event informed the public about the country's
\nprogress in environmental impact assessment, and helped them to
\nunderstand how to better preserve the environment.<\/p>\n
Among the participants was the Sea World Park in Ancol
\nDreamland, North Jakarta. It held a creativity contest for senior
\nhigh school students.<\/p>\n
Ika and Kartini, two SMEA 33 economic high school students,
\nand Advia and Dewi of the SMU 67 high school, joined the contest
\nand said it was a challenge for them to learn how to recycle and
\ncreate new things, such as pencil cases, from scraps.<\/p>\n
Another participant was the National Consortium for Forest and
\nNature Conservation in Indonesia (Konphalindo), an environmental
\ngroup founded in 1991 to help raise public awareness about issues
\nsuch as forest preservation.<\/p>\n
The organization has conducted seminars and research in West
\nKalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, West Java, Irian Jaya, and other
\nparts of the country.<\/p>\n
\"We are glad people are becoming aware of the environment, as
\nwe can see from the increasing number of people who visited our
\nstand,\" Tiwi of Konphalindo said. \"Even the seminar we held
\nduring the exhibition was packed.\"<\/p>\n
The coordinator of the Environmental Bureau of Irian Jaya
\n(BLH) Baidiher Lingga, said that for the sake of the next
\ngeneration, all Indonesians, not just the Irianese, were
\nresponsible for the preservation of the province's ecology.<\/p>\n
Another participant was the National Network of Environment
\nStudy Center, which is associated with a number of universities
\nin Indonesia. It was founded in 1985 and its central office is at
\nthe University of Indonesia in West Java.<\/p>\n
The center conducts research and presents the results twice a
\nyear, according to one of the center's researchers Fauziah.<\/p>\n
Imam Hendargo of the State Minister for Environment's office,
\nsaid the expo was important given life was becoming increasingly
\ninseparable from environmental preservation. (39)<\/p>",
