Environmental analysis a must for new industries<\/p>\n
BANDUNG (JP): Starting on Tuesday, new industries are subject
\nto the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) to be conducted by a
\ncommission which involves local communities, a government
\nregulation stipulates.<\/p>\n
State Minister of the Environment Sonny Keraf introduced the
\nregulation here on Monday when he addressed an environment
\nconference at the Bandung Institute of Science.<\/p>\n
The government, he said, established the commission tasked
\nwith the analyses at national, provincial and municipality levels
\nin line with the full implementation of regional autonomy in
\nJanuary next year.<\/p>\n
\"The commission will involve the public, including non-
\ngovernmental organizations, environmental study centers and
\ninformal leaders,\" Sonny said.<\/p>\n
He said, however, that the regulation could be hampered by
\npolitical interests from certain parties who would exploit it for
\ninvestment and economic growth reasons.<\/p>\n
\"In the past, Pak Emil objected to environmental audits on
\ncertain industries, but he had to accept them because of reasons
\nnot related to the environment,\" Sonny said, referring to former
\nstate minister of the environment Emil Salim.<\/p>\n
Sonny called on businessmen not to worry about the new ruling
\nsince it would not be difficult for them to pass the analysis.<\/p>\n
He further said the government would also initiate next year
\nseven important measures to preserve the environment, including a
\nclean river program.<\/p>\n
\"The clean river program will deal with the quality and
\nquantity of river water,\" Sonny said.<\/p>\n
Another program is called the Blue Sky campaign, with a target
\nof stopping the use of leaded gasoline until 2003. (23\/jun)<\/p>",
