The Indonesian government has set a target for all regional heads to fully address waste management problems by 2029, as mandated directly by President Prabowo Subianto to Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq. The minister emphasised the need for comprehensive solutions from source separation at households to downstream processing, prioritising environmental sustainability over mere awards like Adipura. During a community clean-up event in Malang, Hanif urged regular collective actions to foster public awareness and participated in waste collection alongside local leaders.

The government is targeting the resolution of waste issues in regions
to be completed by no later than 2029. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol
Nurofiq emphasised that this target is a direct mandate from President
Prabowo Subianto to all regional heads. Hanif stated that resolving
waste cannot be delayed and must be carried out comprehensively from
upstream to downstream. “To the regents and mayors, the President has
ordered the resolution of the waste problem by no later than 2029 using
all methods,” said Hanif on Sunday (30/3/2026). Hanif stressed that the
key to waste management lies at the household level through sorting at
the source. This step is considered capable of reducing the burden on
downstream processing while increasing cost efficiency in management. He
reminded that waste resolution should not only be oriented towards
awards such as Adipura. Management must focus on the obligation to
preserve the environment and sustainability for future generations.
“Waste is our obligation to provide a good environment to the
community,” said Hanif. During the community work activity on Jalan
Besar Ijen, Hanif also asked regional governments to routinely mobilise
clean-up actions as a collective community movement. Such efforts are
deemed important to strengthen public awareness in maintaining
environmental cleanliness. Hanif directly participated in picking up
waste together with Malang Mayor Wahyu Hidayat and Malang Regent M
Sanusi. The activity took place in the car-free day area and continued
with cycling around the city as part of the environmental campaign.
",
