Indonesia's Environment Minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has warned business leaders of the deteriorating air and surface water quality in the Jabodetabek metropolitan area, pledging stricter oversight of industrial activities contributing to the decline. He highlighted that air quality is worsening daily and that 13 major rivers are moderately to heavily polluted, urging collective action to preserve environmental sustainability amid reduced land cover and biodiversity. During the 2025 PROPER Environmental Awards, the minister praised companies achieving high environmental management standards, emphasising their role in enhancing national environmental resilience.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has affirmed his commitment
to conducting strict monitoring of all business activities that could
degrade environmental quality, particularly air and surface water in the
Jabodetabek region. According to him, the trend of declining air quality
in this area is increasingly concerning. “From today onwards, we will
closely monitor all business units contributing to the decline in air
quality, especially in heavily agglomerated areas like Jabodetabek.
Every day, air quality is declining, whether weekly, monthly, or
yearly,” Hanif stated at the 2025 PROPER Environmental Awards event on
Tuesday (7/4/2026). In addition to air quality, surface water conditions
are also deteriorating. Hanif revealed that at least 13 major rivers in
Jabodetabek are currently in a moderately to heavily polluted status,
indicating the need for serious attention from all parties. “Our surface
water quality is not very good either. Almost all 13 major rivers in
Jabodetabek are in a moderately to heavily polluted condition,” he said.
The decline in environmental quality not only affects air and water but
also leads to reduced land cover and declining biodiversity. Hanif
emphasised the importance of cooperation from all parties, including
companies, in preserving the environment. He also appreciated companies
that have committed to environmental protection through good
environmental management programmes. The blue predicate award, according
to Hanif, reflects companies’ serious efforts in fulfilling RKL-RPL
requirements, which contribute to environmental resilience. “Thank you
to the companies receiving the green or blue predicates. Your efforts
are extraordinary and serve as a real example for improving our
environmental quality,” Hanif concluded.
",
