Gresik, East Java (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Mohammad Jumhur\nHidayat has rated East Java as the province with the best performance in\nenvironmental management, particularly waste handling, making it worthy\nof serving as a reference for other regions in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
After inspecting SMA Negeri 1 Gresik, which holds the Adiwiyata\nMandiri designation, in Gresik Regency on Wednesday, Jumhur said East\nJava Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa had successfully managed the\nenvironment, especially with regard to waste issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cEast Java ranks first in our assessment of environmental management\nand waste handling. This can serve as an example for other provinces\nthat are still insufficiently serious and neglectful of this issue,\u201d he\nsaid in Gresik on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of\nthe Ministry of Environment, which serves as the basis for the 2026\nevaluation, recorded that waste generation in East Java reaches\napproximately 12,314 tonnes per day, or more than eight million tonnes\nper year.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, an evaluation by the East Java Finance and Development\nSupervisory Agency (BPKP) showed that waste reduction at source through\nsorting and waste banks has only reached around 11 per cent, meaning\ncommunity-based waste management still needs continued\nencouragement.<\/p>\n
Jumhur explained that East Java\u2019s success is inseparable from the\nregional government\u2019s efforts to build public awareness of environmental\nconservation, including through the Adiwiyata Programme, which targets\neducational institutions.<\/p>\n
According to him, the Adiwiyata Programme is an instrument of the\nMinistry of Environment to encourage schools to build an environmentally\nconscious culture through phased assessments up to the highest\ndesignation, namely Adiwiyata Mandiri.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt SMA Negeri 1 Gresik, in our assessment the school falls into the\nhighest category. They have succeeded in fostering environmental\nawareness and serve as an example for educational institutions\nthroughout Indonesia,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said the East\nJava Provincial Government is also developing innovative schools based\non food security to complement the implementation of the Adiwiyata\nProgramme.<\/p>\n
According to her, the concept of food security need not be applied on\nextensive land, but can be developed within the school environment\nthrough agriculture, livestock and fisheries involving students.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want this to become a pilot project. All land within educational\ninstitutions can be utilised, and the results can then be processed\ndownstream into value-added products that can be marketed,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
