        "content": "<p>East Java has been ranked first in the assessment of environmental\nmanagement and waste handling, according to Environment Minister\nMohammad Jumhur Hidayat, making it a worthy reference for other regions\nin Indonesia. After inspecting SMA Negeri 1 Gresik, which holds the\nAdiwiyata Mandiri title, in Gresik Regency on Wednesday, Jumhur said\nEast Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has successfully managed the\nenvironment, particularly regarding waste issues. \u201cEast Java is ranked\nfirst in our assessment of environmental management and waste handling.\nThis can serve as an example for other provinces that are still less\nserious and neglectful of this issue,\u201d he said in Gresik on Wednesday.\nBased on data from the National Waste Management Information System of\nthe Ministry of Environment, which serves as the reference for the 2026\nevaluation, waste generation in East Java reaches approximately 12,314\ntonnes per day, or more than eight million tonnes per year. Meanwhile,\nan evaluation by the East Java Financial and Development Supervisory\nAgency shows that waste reduction at source through sorting and waste\nbanks has only reached around 11 per cent, so strengthening\ncommunity-based waste management is still being encouraged. Jumhur\nexplained that East Java\u2019s success is inseparable from the local\ngovernment\u2019s efforts to build public awareness of environmental\nconservation, including through the Adiwiyata Programme targeting\neducational institutions. According to him, the Adiwiyata Programme is\nan instrument of the Ministry of Environment to encourage schools to\nbuild a culture of environmental care through phased assessments up to\nthe highest title, Adiwiyata Mandiri. \u201cAt SMA Negeri 1 Gresik, our\nassessment places it in the highest category. They have succeeded in\nfostering environmental awareness and serve as an example for\neducational institutions across Indonesia,\u201d he said. Meanwhile, East\nJava Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa said the provincial government is\nalso developing innovative schools based on food security to complement\nthe implementation of the Adiwiyata Programme. She said the concept of\nfood security does not have to be applied on large tracts of land but\ncan be developed within the school environment through agriculture,\nanimal husbandry, or fisheries involving students. \u201cWe want this to be a\npilot project. All land in educational institutions can be utilised, and\nthe produce can be downstreamed into processed products with added value\nthat can be marketed,\u201d she said. Prior to visiting SMA Negeri 1 Gresik,\nthe Environment Minister also inspected the implementation of the ASRI\nGreen and Smart Port Initiatives at Pier C of Petrokimia Gresik Port as\npart of efforts to promote sustainable environmental management\npractices in the industrial and port sectors.<\/p>",
