Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq is confident that Bali\u2019s\nwaste problem will be resolved by July 2026, or three months from now.\nHe requested that waste handling not be focused solely on Denpasar and\nBadung, but expanded immediately to other districts in Bali.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think we need to wait long. I\u2019m confident that by July, all\nwaste can be managed properly. However, we remind the Governor that we\nare not waiting for waste handling in Denpasar and Badung. We want to\nstart immediately in the other districts,\u201d Hanif explained during his\nvisit to the Suwung Final Disposal Site (TPA Suwung) and the Integrated\nWaste Processing Site (TPST) Tahura Ngurah Rai I, accompanied by Bali\nGovernor Wayan Koster and Denpasar Mayor IGN Jaya Negara, on Friday\n(17\/4\/2026).<\/p>\n
Hanif stated that his side has issued administrative sanctions and\nwill summon relevant parties next week. If there is no improvement by\nthe deadline, the government will use its authority under the law to\nhalt open dumping practices.<\/p>\n
\u201cNext week they will be summoned; we have already issued\nadministrative sanctions until August,\u201d Hanif added.<\/p>\n
New Waste-to-Energy Facility to Operate in 3 Years<\/p>\n
Hanif revealed that Bali\u2019s current waste volume is around 2,000\ntonnes per day. Meanwhile, the new waste-to-energy (WTE) project will\nbegin construction around June and is estimated to operate in the next\nthree years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s planned for groundbreaking around June. But that\u2019s under\nDanantara\u2019s authority; we are handling the implementation norms,\u201d Hanif\nclarified.<\/p>\n
Hanif requested that Waste Processing Sites (TPST) and Reduce, Reuse,\nRecycle Waste Processing Sites (TPS3R) in Denpasar City and Badung\nRegency handle up to 200 tonnes per day.<\/p>\n
Hanif targeted several waste processing facilities to operate at\nmaximum capacity, such as TPST Kertalangu and TPST Tahura I, which are\nasked to reach 200 tonnes per day. Meanwhile, TPST Tahura II is targeted\nat 100 tonnes per day, and the TPS3R in Sesetan is to be increased from\n10 tonnes to 35 tonnes per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo I really urge that the equipment must arrive by the end of July;\nthe equipment must be operational,\u201d Hanif explained.<\/p>\n
Based on preliminary data, there are about 23 TPS3R units in Denpasar\nand 48 units in Badung. Hanif emphasised the importance of dividing\nwaste service areas in each village for more effective management. He\nalso suggested that waste handling processes be carried out before\nsunrise to maintain Bali\u2019s aesthetics.<\/p>\n
However, Hanif assessed that the current TPST performance is not yet\noptimal, especially in the waste recovery process. He mentioned that the\ncompleteness of new equipment is estimated to be fulfilled by the end of\nJune.<\/p>\n
Hanif denied any involvement of specific parties in the plan to close\nTPA Suwung, including the Bali Kura-Kura Special Economic Zone (KEK). He\naffirmed that waste management policies apply generally and are not\ntargeted at any particular party.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have nothing to do with KEK Kura-Kura. I have stated that\neverything applies generally; no one is allowed to process waste without\nnorms,\u201d Hanif stressed.<\/p>\n
Only Denpasar-Badung Serious About Waste Sorting<\/p>\n
He also mentioned that only Denpasar City and Badung Regency are\ntruly implementing waste sorting in Indonesia. \u201cBut I personally give\ngreat appreciation. Perhaps in our country, the ones sorting waste are\nonly these two cities. Governor, with your permission. Even though I\u2019m\nforcing myself, because Bali has its uniqueness, the waste emergency is\nalso one of the anchors or epicentres of our tourism world,\u201d Hanif\nstated.<\/p>\n
Hanif revealed that the latest report shows Denpasar City and Badung\nRegency have achieved nearly 60% waste sorting rates. \u201cI\u2019m a bit moved\nand surprised, and very grateful that in less than a month, the\ngovernment and people of Denpasar City and Badung Regency have managed\nto sort over 50%,\u201d Hanif said.<\/p>\n
He emphasised the importance of implementing Law No.\u00a018 of 2008 on\nWaste Management, particularly in handling waste produced by each\nparty.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not neglect or create a sense of injustice; when one\ncommunity has sorted, the other must also be urged to sort immediately,\u201d\nHanif said.<\/p>\n
Organic Waste Transported to TPA Suwung<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Jaya Negara explained that current waste management is\ndone through sorting. Organic waste is transported to TPA Suwung every\nTuesday and Friday, while inorganic waste and residue can be disposed of\ndaily.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Minister\u2019s directive earlier is that organic waste I bring to\nTPA from villages that do not have TPS3R,\u201d Jaya Negara said.<\/p>\n
He added that organic waste from areas without TPS3R will be taken to\nTPA Suwung. Those with facilities will be processed into compost, and\nsome sent to Klungkung.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, after shredding, we ferment it; once it\u2019s ready, it\u2019s taken to\nKlungkung,\u201d Jaya Negara added.<\/p>\n
Jaya Negara also affirmed that minor criminal offences (Tipiring)\nwill still be enforced against violators of waste disposal rules.\nHowever, law enforcement will be balanced with the readiness of waste\nmanagement facilities for the community.<\/p>\n
