Indonesia's Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has highlighted the acceleration of the Semarang Raya Waste-to-Energy Processing (PSEL) project as a strategic solution to manage large-scale waste in Central Java, involving collaboration between central and local governments and the private sector. The facility, set to process 1,100 tonnes of waste daily across Semarang City and Kendal Regency, aims to optimise waste management and convert refuse into electricity, supporting the province's goal of achieving zero waste by 2029. Local leaders have committed to interim waste reduction efforts, including public education on sorting, to bridge the gap until the plant's completion.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated
that accelerating the construction of the Semarang Raya Waste-to-Energy
Processing (PSEL) facility is one of the solutions to address
large-scale waste in the region. “Although many technologies and waste
management methods are available, large-scale operations require
advanced technology. PSEL serves as a strategic solution because it can
convert waste into electricity. However, during the construction period,
the Governor will lead waste reduction efforts using available and
forthcoming technologies,” Hanif said in a written statement in Jakarta
on Sunday. Hanif made these remarks while witnessing the signing of a
memorandum of understanding and cooperation agreement for the
preparation of the PSEL construction between the Central Java Governor,
the Regent of Kendal, and the Mayor of Semarang at an event held in
Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday (28/3). The Semarang Raya PSEL
adopts a regional agglomeration concept, covering Semarang City and
Kendal Regency, as a hub for environmentally friendly technology-based
waste management. The project is managed collaboratively between the
central government, local governments, and the private sector to ensure
optimal and sustainable operations. The Semarang Raya PSEL is planned to
process around 1,100 tonnes per day. This will enable nearly all waste
in Semarang City to be managed optimally, while also enhancing waste
management achievements in Kendal Regency. On that occasion, Central
Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi expressed his commitment to the PSEL
construction as part of the government’s waste handling efforts. “By
2029, we aim for zero waste. We are committed to reduction so that waste
in Central Java can be managed well and truly achieve zero waste,” he
explained. Meanwhile, Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti and
Kendal Regent Dyah Kartika Permanasari also expressed their readiness to
support the PSEL construction. Both will ensure coordinated waste
management and conduct massive public outreach on waste sorting during
the waiting period for the PSEL construction.
",
