Englishman faces deportation<\/p>\n
PALU, Central Sulawesi: The provincial immigration office here
\nwill deport an English national for exceeding his permitted stay
\nin the country, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The office director, Darmawan Daud, told the news agency on
\nWednesday that the Englishman, identified as Crispin Lancelot
\nGibbs, 36, had been detained pending approval from the
\nimmigration head office in Jakarta of his deportation.<\/p>\n
Darmawan said Gibbs was held after immigration officers found
\nhis temporary stay permit had expired when he was returning
\nimmigration documents last Friday.<\/p>\n
The permit had been issued after he was hired by an ecotourism
\nfirm, PT Sarana Wisata Wakai. His contract ended on May 30, 2002.<\/p>\n
Gibbs has protested his arrest, claiming that he holds a visa
\nissued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n
Darmawan said Gibbs had found a new job as a voluntary diving
\ninstructor with the Gorontalo administration, with the approval

Regent Johanes Globe Gebze told reporters here on Wednesday
\nthat the tug boat, passenger vessel and freighter that had been
\nordered were needed due to the regency's geographic situation.
\nBigger than Java island in terms of area, Merauke people rely on
\nriver and sea transportation.<\/p>\n
Except for the freighter, the ships were handed over to the
\nregency administration when President Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nvisited the shipyard on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

SAMPIT, Central Kalimantan: Local councillors in Sampit have
\nurged the government to try those allegedly involved in ethnic
\nriots in the Central Kalimantan town two years ago in "neutral"
\nplaces like Jakarta and Medan.<\/p>\n
The proposal was raised after the Ministry of Justice and
\nHuman Rights disqualified Banjarmasin, the capital of neighboring
\nprovince South Kalimantan, as the host of the trial.<\/p>\n
One of the councillors said that bringing suspects to justice
\noutside Kalimantan would prevent local politicians from meddling
\nin the legal process.<\/p>\n
"Trying the suspects in Sampit will not trigger security
\nproblems, but it is feared that the trial will be susceptible to
\nintervention from the conflicting parties," chief of Reform
\nfaction Sugianto said.<\/p>\n
Clashes between migrant Madurese and indigenous Dayaks erupted
