English is difficult<\/p>\n
Besides CNN and other foreign TV broadcasts, TVRI and RCTI are
\nnow also airing English language news programs in the morning.<\/p>\n
We realize English is a difficult foreign language for most
\nIndonesians, and English is not compulsory in elementary school.
\nSome elementary schools started to teach English in the fourth
\ngrade only two years ago.<\/p>\n
However, I do not believe that Indonesians are poor learners
\nof foreign languages such as English. I think it is the method of
\nteaching the language that is not quite correct and needs
\nreviewing. It is evident that many students, having finished
\ntheir high school or even university education, are still not
\nable to talk and write English properly.<\/p>\n
It is also disturbing to note that the English used by the
\nnational broadcasters is not always correct. I noticed during
\nRCTI's English program one sentence which was incorrect, with the
\nperson asking: \"What is the national car 'Timor' stands for?\" As
\nfar as I know, that sentence is grammatically wrong. The sentence
\nshould be: What does the national car \"Timor\" stand for?<\/p>\n
I would appreciate further comment on this matter.<\/p>\n
