Engineer's group urges government to put more emphasis on technology<\/p>\n

A coalition of three engineers associations, boasting a total of
\n17 million members between them, urged the government on Thursday
\nto pay more attention to technological development in the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian Society of Engineers and Technicians (PATI),
\nthe Center for Technology and Industry Development (CTID) and the
\nCaucus for Technology agreed that the government should create a
\nfavorable climate for innovations not only from engineers but
\nfrom the common people.<\/p>\n
Leading figures of the coalition attended Thursday's function
\nat the Bung Karno Tennis Indoor Stadium, at Senayan, in Central
\nJakarta to raise public awareness about technology. The event was
\nheld in conjunction the Youth Pledge Day, which falls on Oct. 28.<\/p>\n
GM Tampubolon, spokesperson for the coalition, told reporters
\nthat the government should implement People's Consultative
\nAssembly Decree No. VI\/2002 which stipulates that the country
\nshould treat technology as a key element in the national
\ndevelopment strategy.<\/p>\n
"We aim to raise people's awareness of the importance of
\ntechnology as a key element in our efforts to create jobs," said
\nTampubolon, who is also an MPR legislator representing the
\nInterest group faction.<\/p>\n
The cross-faction coalition also called on engineers to
\npioneer innovations, he said.<\/p>\n
Also attending the function were House of Representatives
\nSpeaker Akbar Tandjung of Golkar Party, Minister of Agriculture
\nBungaran Saragih and Minister of Manpower and Transmigration
\nJacob Nuwa Wea, both from the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle.<\/p>\n
Some 1,000 students from various senior high schools were also
\npresent in the event.<\/p>\n
Unlike the nonpartisan CITD and PTI, the Caucus for Technology
\nis a group consisting of politicians from various parties, among
\nothers, Arifin Panigoro, Marwah Daud Ibrahim, Panda Nababan,
\nPramono Anung and Sri Edi Swasono.<\/p>",
