The Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy\nConservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Eniya\nListiani Dewi, has stressed that accelerating the energy transition is\nkey for Indonesia to achieve its carbon emission reduction targets.\nWithout concrete steps in the next five years, Indonesia\u2019s Nationally\nDetermined Contribution target risks becoming just a figure without real\nimplementation.<\/p>\n
She stated that the commitment towards net zero emission must be\nrealised immediately through various strategies, especially in the\nenergy sector, which is one of the largest contributors to\nemissions.<\/p>\n
\u201cGoing forward, the net zero emission commitment must be completed\nsoon. Because if we do not move within these five years, our NDC target\nwill actually just become a number, so it will be meaningless in the\nfuture,\u201d Eniya said during a Ministerial Dialogue held on the sidelines\nof Envirotech on Thursday.<\/p>\n
In its latest NDC target, Indonesia is aiming for an emission\nreduction of 466 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. However, Eniya said\nthe next NDC approach will no longer be based solely on a percentage\nreduction in emissions but will require concrete steps to change the\nnational energy system.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe FOLU (Forestry and Other Land Use) and energy sectors are the\nlargest sectors. Our peak emission is in 2035, and for the energy sector\nit has shifted. The energy sector has become a very important sector for\nus to immediately reduce,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Eniya explained that the government has prepared a number of policies\nto encourage the energy transition, including through clean energy\nsector regulations. Indonesia, according to her, has significant capital\nbecause almost all renewable energy sources are available\ndomestically.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesia actually has all types of renewable energy. Other\ncountries do not necessarily have everything. We have geothermal, ocean\nenergy, wind, solar power, bioenergy, bioethanol, and biodiesel,\u201d she\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Eniya stated that the utilisation of new and renewable energy is the\nmain strategy for reducing emissions in the energy sector. The\ngovernment is targeting the renewable energy sector to reduce emissions\nby around 82.47 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.<\/p>\n
Besides renewables, energy efficiency is considered the second\nimportant strategy. Eniya said energy efficiency can be implemented\nstarting from the household level through the use of energy-efficient\nelectrical appliances. She urged the public to choose electronic devices\nwith high efficiency levels, such as devices with a five-star label.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen buying a refrigerator, air conditioner, or fan, attention must\nbe paid to this. There is a five-star label indicating that the\nappliance is efficient. Indeed, the initial price may be more expensive,\nbut one to two years later it will be cheaper because the electricity\nconsumption is low,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Eniya added that energy efficiency has the potential to contribute to\nan emission reduction of around 30 million tonnes of CO2. The use of LED\nlights as a replacement for conventional lamps is also part of the\nenergy-saving efforts.<\/p>\n
The next strategy is the construction of clean energy power plants,\nincluding the conversion of plants that still use coal to more advanced\ntechnologies resulting in lower emissions. The government is also\npromoting the use of gas as a transition energy source because it has\nlower carbon emissions compared to coal.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is making great efforts\nto secure gas supplies, because gas is a low-carbon energy source. This\nis one of our efforts to reduce emissions,\u201d Eniya stated.<\/p>\n
In addition, the government is promoting the use of low-carbon fuels,\nincluding the development of household gas networks, energy conversion,\nand electric stoves. Post-mining reclamation programmes will also be\ndirected to support the energy transition.<\/p>\n
According to Eniya, ex-mining land can be utilised for the\nconstruction of solar power plants. This is in line with the President\u2019s\ndirective regarding the development of solar power plant capacity of up\nto 100 gigawatts.<\/p>\n
\u201cPost-mining land can become one of the locations for providing solar\npower plants. So, land that has finished being used can be reused for\nclean energy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Eniya also conveyed the development of Indonesia\u2019s renewable energy\nmix, which continues to increase. In the first quarter of 2026, the\nrenewable energy mix had reached 18.3 per cent, exceeding the lower\nlimit of the government\u2019s target.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe set target is in the range of 17 to 21 per cent. Alhamdulillah,\nit has reached 18.3 per cent,\u201d said Eniya.<\/p>\n
However, to achieve the 2030 emission reduction target, the renewable\nenergy mix needs to be continuously increased.
