Endin gets suspended jail term<\/p>\n

Endin Wahyudin, a defendant in a defamation case against two
\nSupreme Court justices, was sentenced to a three-month suspended
\njail term with a six-month probation period at the Central
\nJakarta District Court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Amiruddin Zakaria stated that Endin, 49, was
\nfound guilty of defaming Marnis Kahar and Supraptini Sutarto, as
\nthe defendant claimed he had bribed the two justices to influence
\ntheir decisions over a land dispute case.<\/p>\n
Endin, a broker, had earlier said that late in 1988 he gave
\nthe money to the justices, and another Rp 96 million to M. Yahya
\nHarahap, another Supreme Court justice who is now retired.<\/p>\n
\"The Attorney General's Office, along with the (now defunct)
\nJoint Anticorruption Team (TGPTPK) had promised to protect me,
\nbut they sent me to this court. It's just not fair,\" Endin said
\nafter the trial.<\/p>\n
Endin, a witness in a bribery case involving Marnis,
\nSupraptini and M. Yahya Harahap, reported the case to TGPTPK
\nbecause the justices had guaranteed he would win his case, but he
\nstill lost.<\/p>\n
Marnis, Supraptini and Harahap were tried earlier this year
\nbut the courts dropped the charges.<\/p>\n
Separately, lawyer Todung Mulya Lubis regretted the verdict,
\nsaying that it was a setback to the country's attempts to combat
\ncorruption, collusion and nepotism in the judicial entity here.<\/p>\n
The verdict reflected the judges' solidarity to protect their
\ncolleagues, said Todung.<\/p>\n
\"People who know the (bribery) cases will be afraid to report
\nthe crime to the police,\" he told The Jakarta Post, saying that
\nthe government's statements to combat corruption, collusion and
\nnepotism were just buzzwords.<\/p>\n
Todung urged the government to stipulate a law on witness
\nprotection.<\/p>",
