This year\u2019s commemoration of the Prophet Muhammad\u2019s birthday arrives\namid very real and pressing social concerns. On one hand, the resounding\nsalawat and praises echoing in various mosques and study circles\ndemonstrate the undying love of the faithful for the messenger. On the\nother hand, this spiritual resonance collides with harsh material\nrealities: the complaints of mothers in the corridors of traditional\nmarkets. The increasingly uncontrollable surge in staple food prices,\nthe shrinking purchasing power of the lower-middle class, and the\nuncertainty of the global food supply chain have placed family economic\nresilience on the brink of collapse.<\/p>\n
In facing this suffocating economic turbulence, society often falls\ninto a passive attitude\u2014looking upwards, waiting for structural\nintervention from the government, waiting for market operations that\noften serve merely as political cosmetics, or simply hoping for meagre\ndirect cash assistance. However, the history of early Islamic\ncivilisation in Medina teaches something entirely different.<\/p>\n
If we are willing to read the prophetic biography not merely as\nromance and nostalgia of the past, but as a blueprint for crisis\ngovernance and economic management, we will find an enlightening fact:\nthe Prophet Muhammad laid the foundation for food security and economic\nsovereignty precisely through the solidarity of citizens at the\ngrassroots level.<\/p>\n
Let us rewind the hands of history. When thousands of Muhajirin\narrived in Medina after migrating from Mecca, an economic crisis and\npopulation explosion occurred drastically within a short time. These\nmigrants left behind all their assets, land, and business networks. They\narrived without capital, while the trade supply chain and markets in\nMedina at that time were controlled by certain oligopolistic groups who\noften manipulated prices. The Prophet\u2019s initial intervention was indeed\nthe Mu\u2019akhat (brotherhood between the Muhajirin and the Anshar) based on\nempathy and wealth redistribution. However, as a visionary statesman,\nthe Prophet Muhammad was fully aware that temporary philanthropic aid\nwould never be sustainable if not immediately followed by the creation\nof independent means of production.<\/p>\n
It was at that point of crisis that the Prophet issued a highly\nrevolutionary agrarian policy, known in Islamic commercial jurisprudence\nas the concept of Ihya al-Mawat (reviving dead land). He firmly\ndeclared: \u2018Whoever revives dead land (unowned and neglected), then that\nland belongs to him\u2019 (HR. Abu Dawud).<\/p>\n
This declaration was not merely an ordinary legal basis for land\ntenure, but a massive and strategic encouragement for society to move\ncollectively. The Prophet invited his people to stop lamenting their\nfate and begin cultivating every inch of idle land on the outskirts of\nthe city into new food production centres. Furthermore, the Prophet\u2019s\nfuturistic orientation in maintaining ecological balance and the supply\nchain is eternally recorded in another of his sayings: \u2018No Muslim plants\na tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, a person, or an animal eats from\nit, but that it is counted as charity for him\u2019 (HR.
