Empty-handed Sutan gives Chris John an ultimatum<\/p>\n

Boxing champion Chris John's embittered former trainer has set
\na Friday deadline to receive his remaining compensation payment
\nfor alleged breach of contract.<\/p>\n
\"I'm only pursuing my rights. If he deviates from what we have
\nagreed upon, I will proceed with my complaint to the police,\"
\nSutan Rambing said during a news conference at the office of the
\nState Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Wednesday's meeting was also attended by representatives of
\nthe minister's office, the supervisory and controlling body for
\nprofessional sports (BPPOPI), which has mediated the dispute, and
\nthe Indonesian Pro Boxing Commission (KTI).<\/p>\n
Sutan accused Chris John of violating their contract by
\nresigning from the former's Semarang-based Bank Buana training
\ncamp in December 2004. An agreement specifying compensation of Rp
\n400 million was reached between fight promoter Daniel Bahari and
\nSutan four days before Chris John's April 22 successful World
\nBoxing Association (WBA) featherweight title defense against
\nAmerican Derrick Gainer.<\/p>\n
A total of Rp 150 million was paid before the fight, with
\nDaniel reportedly responsible for arranging the final payment on
\nApril 22.<\/p>\n
Sutan appeared to get the runaround on Wednesday, with Daniel
\narriving early at the office to hand over the final check.<\/p>\n
However, Haryo Yuniarto from BPPOPI's legal department said
\nthe check could not be provided to Sutan because it had not been
\nendorsed by the boxer.<\/p>\n
\"Daniel presented the check at 10 a.m. today, but he
\nimmediately returned to Bali because he said his son was having
\nleg surgery,\" Haryo said.<\/p>\n
The check -- issued by Bank Buana's Bali branch in the amount
\nof Rp 250 million -- was shown to reporters.<\/p>\n
\"We will wait for Chris John and Daniel on Friday. If they do
\nnot appear, it's up to Sutan whether he will proceed with a
\nlawsuit,\" Haryo said.<\/p>\n
\"All disputing sides need to be present to bring the issue to
\na close.\"<\/p>\n
Chris John, who received US$90,000 for the Gainer bout, said
\nhe wanted to manage his own affairs when he parted ways with
\nSutan. He is now trained by Australian Craig Christian.<\/p>\n
Others contended that the boxer was unhappy with the division
\nof purses from his two previous title defenses in 2004.<\/p>\n
Sutan -- who has always argued that Chris John agreed to a
\nstandard 50-50 split of prize money -- vented his frustration on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
\"I have been suffering in the past three months. I refrained
\nfrom commenting about the issue. But when I saw there was no
\nindication of goodwill from them, I could not let it go on,\"
\nSutan said.<\/p>\n
\"This is not fair that after all my hard work, someone else
\nhas stolen (Chris John) from me that way. But I have no hard
\nfeelings because I love sports. I just hope that we reach
\namicable terms on Friday.\"<\/p>",
