Employees complain about higher commuting costs<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Hundreds of Tangerang regency employees, who
\nhave been moved to the regency's new administrative complex in
\nTigaraksa, complained yesterday that they had to shoulder higher
\ntransportation costs for their longer commute.<\/p>\n
Many employees now have to spend between Rp 5,000 and Rp
\n10,000 a day for their commute to and from the office, said Asep,
\nan employee of the regency's office of the Ministry of Public
\nWorks.<\/p>\n
\"We don't have enough money to buy food with such a high level
\nof transportation costs,\" Asep said.<\/p>\n
\"If this continues, we're afraid that we'll only be able to
\nshow up at the office just twice a week. If this happens, it
\nwould disrupt public services,\" another employee, who asked not
\nto be named, said.<\/p>\n
The two employees urged Regent Agus Djunara to pay serious
\nattention to the problem, suggesting he provide employees with
\nhousing near the new office complex.<\/p>\n
The regency's plan to move its offices, which started several
\nyears ago, has apparently not run as smoothly as expected.
\nFinancial problems have been cited as the main problem.<\/p>\n
About half of the regency's offices, including those dealing
\nwith development affairs, road construction, city planning, land
\nadministration, fire fighting and funeral affairs, have moved to
\nthe new location.<\/p>\n
The regency's regional development planning agency and the
\nregional inspector's office are currently in the process of
\nmoving.<\/p>\n
Other activities to finish the move to the new site, however,
\nhave come to a standstill, mainly because of the monetary crisis.<\/p>\n
The regency's spokeswoman, Enna Karlina, said the regency had
\nknown about the employees' complaints about transportation costs
\nfor a long time. Officials are still mulling the possibility of
\nproviding employee housing near the new complex, she said.<\/p>\n
\"The regency is still looking for developers who could build
\ncheap houses near the headquarters, or at least in Cisoka
\ndistrict.\"<\/p>\n
Officials are planning to find out how many employees need
\nhousing near the office, she said.<\/p>\n
The regent has reportedly started working in the new complex
\ntwice a week in a show of support for the employees already moved
\nthere.<\/p>\n
The regency's old office is located in Tangerang mayoralty.<\/p>\n
Karlina said the regency had allocated Rp 5.3 billion this
\nyear -- much less than last year's Rp 13 billion -- for the
\nconstruction of the regency's secretarial office and the
\nTangerang legislative council's building.<\/p>\n
The construction of the two offices were both neglected by the
\nregency's contractor -- PT Panca Wiratama Sakti. (41\/jun)<\/p>",
