SpaceX has outlined a massive compensation package for its founder Elon Musk, potentially worth hundreds of millions of shares with super-voting rights, contingent on achieving ambitious milestones such as elevating the company's valuation to US$7.5 trillion and establishing a permanent colony of 1 million people on Mars. Additional shares could be earned by operating an off-world data centre with 100 terawatts of computing power, equivalent to tens of thousands of nuclear reactors. This unprecedented scheme, which risks Musk receiving no shares if targets are unmet, underscores the challenges of retaining his focus amid leadership of multiple ventures like Tesla, with an IPO eyed around his birthday in June 2026 at a US$1.75 trillion valuation.

SpaceX is preparing a jumbo compensation scheme for its founder, Elon
Musk, with targets including bringing humans to Mars and building a
permanent colony of 1 million people. Based on company documents filed
with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Musk is promised up to
hundreds of millions of shares with super-voting rights if he meets
several extreme targets, including pushing SpaceX’s valuation beyond
US$7.5 trillion (Rp 130.496 trillion). Not only that, Musk could also
obtain an additional tens of millions of shares if SpaceX manages to
operate a data centre in space with computing capacity reaching 100
terawatts, a figure equivalent to tens of thousands of nuclear reactors
operating simultaneously. However, Musk will receive no shares if the
valuation target is not achieved. Since 2019, he has only received an
annual salary of US$54,080 (Rp 941 million) from SpaceX. The value of
this compensation package cannot yet be determined because SpaceX
remains a private company. SpaceX is targeting an initial public
offering (IPO) around Musk’s birthday on 28 June, with a company
valuation of around US$1.75 trillion (Rp 30.450 trillion), according to
a Reuters report cited on Tuesday (5/5/2026). Executive compensation
expert Eric Hoffmann from Farient Advisors said he has never seen a
similar compensation package in any other company. “I’m not a physicist
or astronomer, so I don’t even know where to start. The measure is, has
this ever been done in human history? The answer is no. So this is
difficult,” Hoffmann stated. He assessed that this scheme reflects the
challenge of maintaining Musk’s focus, who also leads Tesla. Indeed,
there are indications of competition between the two companies in vying
for the billionaire’s attention.
",
