Ellyas' trial begins in W. Jakarta<\/p>\n

The West Jakarta District Court began on Thursday the trial of
\nformer world boxing champion Ellyas Pical, who was arrested at
\nthe Miles discotheque in West Jakarta in July after allegedly
\nselling three ecstasy pills to undercover police.<\/p>\n
Prosecutor Andi Irma said Ellyas risked a maximum sentence of
\n15 years and Rp 150 million fine if it was proven the pills
\nbelonged to Indonesia's first world boxing champion.<\/p>\n
\"We have sufficient evidence that Ellyas was in possession of
\nthree ecstasy pills. Article 59 of Law No. 39\/1947 on drugs and
\nArticle 55 of Law No. 22\/1997 on psychotropic stipulate a
\nminimum sentence of four years and a maximum 15 years,\" Andi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Another suspect Lisdiana, who was arrested with Ellyas, was
\nalso charged under the same laws.<\/p>\n
In their indictment, prosecutors said that Lisdiana entrusted
\nthree blue ecstasy pills to Ellyas which he sold to three
\nundercover police who nabbed him on July 13. Police arrested
\nLisdiana not long after.<\/p>\n
A laboratory test at the National Police Headquarters
\nconfirmed the tablets were ecstasy pills.<\/p>\n
According to prosecutors, the ecstasy belonged to Silvi,
\nanother suspect who is still at large.<\/p>\n
Ellyas, frequently smiled during the trial and refused to
\nanswer questions from reporters before and after. His wife, Rina
\nSiahaya, was also present.<\/p>\n
Ellyas' lawyer Hamid Hussen said that his client was innocent.<\/p>\n
\"I don't want to argue with what the prosecutors have said.
\nThe more important thing is to prepare the best arguments for the
\nnext hearing,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Hamid said the defense would present a number of witnesses,
\nthat would show his client's innocence, including Silvi.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Muljanto decided to adjourn the trial until
\nSept. 22.<\/p>\n
Ellyas held the International Boxing Federation's super
\nflyweight title from 1985 until 1989. After retiring from boxing
\nin the early 1990s he began working as a bouncer.<\/p>",
