Elite's lack of concern<\/p>\n

The government finally raised fuel oil prices, effective as of
\nMarch 1. Minister of Finance Jusuf Anwar said this decision
\nrequired no approval from the House of Representatives (DPR),
\nunless a state budget amendment was sought.<\/p>\n
The minister may be right that the fuel price increase is the
\ngovernment's prerogative. But he may have forgotten that the
\nHouse represents the population and is the government's partner,
\nwhich should have been consulted.<\/p>\n
In dealing with the sensitive issue of fuel prices, the
\ngovernment seems to have overlooked the House, which opposed the
\nfuel price rise. It even tried to justify the increase through
\nthe Regional Representatives Council (DPD), whose speaker was
\npresent when the president announced the decision.<\/p>\n
Does it mean that the DPD has a more important role than the
\nHouse? If so, why has the DPD looked just like an \"adornment of
\ndemocracy\", with the right to speak yet without the right to
\nvote? This is really an oddity.<\/p>\n
