Elephants run amok<\/p>\n
PEKANBARU, Riau: Dozens of wild elephants have ran amok
\nseveral times over the past few weeks and destroyed thousands of
\nrubber trees in the Sumatran village of Bangkinang in Riau, a
\nrubber planter said here Friday.<\/p>\n
A herd of about 40 elephants scared farmers away from tapping
\nthe rubber trees, the farmer said.<\/p>\n
Said Abdurrachman, the head of the population and environment
\nbureau of Riau administration, blamed the rampages on the fact
\nthat the elephants had been forced out of their habitat.<\/p>\n
The Koto Panjang area, previously known as the habitat of
\nelephants, has been developed into a hydropower plant. Some
\nelephants had been sent to elephant training schools, Said said.<\/p>\n
"The rampaging elephants were probably those left behind," he
