Elephants kill 17 people a year<\/p>\n
BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Wild elephants on the rampage trample
\nto death up to 17 people a year in this Sumatran province, says
\nchief of the provincial forestry office A.S.M. Panjaitan.<\/p>\n
He said that each year in Lampung an estimated 1,000 wild
\nelephants, which are protected by law, encroach on human
\nsettlements, destroying crops and killing people.<\/p>\n
In the latest incident last week, dozens of elephants went on
\nthe rampage in several hamlets in western Lampung, killing one
\nperson and injuring many others.<\/p>\n
\"Such encroachment has been going on for many years and the
\nproblem is getting serious,\" Panjaitan told Antara.<\/p>\n
The elephant population is rapidly increasing while their
\nhabitat is dwindling due to the human pressure, such as
\ndevelopment of resettlement areas and plantations, he said.<\/p>\n
The elephant training center in Way Kambas is able to tame and
\ntrain 20 elephants per year. Trained elephants are used to help
\nwith odd jobs, such as moving logs. (pan)<\/p>",
