The big family of WWF-Indonesia would like to wish you a happy
\nbirthday and prosperous future on the occasion of your 17th
\nbirthday.<\/p>\n
As a birthday gift, we are sending you this letter of concern
\nregarding events celebrating your birthday.<\/p>\n
Like other conservation organizations, we are deeply concerned
\nwith your tug-of-war event at Senayan Main Stadium on April 23,
\n2000.<\/p>\n
With only about 3,000 to 4,500 wild elephants in Sumatra, your
\nelephant entertainment conveyed an inaccurate perception of
\nelephant conservation. Unfortunately, the challenge of dealing
\nwith habitat fragmentation of endangered species, such as the
\nSumatran elephants, is overshadowed by the games and attractions
\nperformed by those animals.<\/p>\n
WWF Indonesia believes that creating a natural living space
\nfor the Sumatran elephants is important and seriously needed. By
\nallowing the elephants to live in their natural habitats, we can
\nreduce the need to house them at elephant centers and\/or Taman
\nSafari where they have to perform logging and entertainment
\nservices.<\/p>\n
More than a dozen reputable international and Indonesian
\nconservation organizations believe that conservation of
\nendangered species is an in situ (habitat) conservation effort.<\/p>\n
Since your celebration took place and images of the tug-of-war
\nbetween elephant and human -- including a picture of The Jakarta
\nPost General Manager riding on an elephant in Senayan Main
\nStadium -- have been printed and widely disseminated, we suggest
\nthat the Post publish a special supplement to highlight various
\nthreats and in situ conservation activities of Sumatran
\nelephants.<\/p>\n
