        "content": "<p>Electronic goods smuggling attempt foiled by customs<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Customs and Excise officials foiled an attempt<br>\non Thursday to smuggle eight containers of electronic goods<br>\nthrough Tanjung Priok seaport in North Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The electronic goods, ranging from televisions to telephone<br>\ndevices, were transported in eight containers onboard the<br>\nSingaporian ship, Uslan. The goods were packed in hundreds of<br>\nboxes with \"Compaq\" computer labels.<\/p>\n<p>Head of the Tanjung Priok Customs and Excise Office Roy Ronald<br>\nLimo said the ship arrived from Singapore on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\"One of our officials became suspicious when he found the<br>\nvolume of goods on the shipping manifest was different from the<br>\nactual volume.<\/p>\n<p>\"The documents said the ship carried computer devices, but<br>\nthere were various kinds of electronic goods inside the boxes<br>\nother than computers,\" he told reporters at the seaport.<\/p>\n<p>Roy said the officials are now searching for the companies<br>\nresponsible for sending the contraband.<\/p>\n<p>\"The state would have suffered losses of approximately Rp 1<br>\nbillion (US$105,797) due to the manipulation of the documents,\"<br>\nhe said, without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Yanto, a trader at Orion Plaza in Glodok told<br>\nAntara: \"For the last several weeks, the demand for electronic<br>\ngoods has decreased.\"<\/p>\n<p>The trader said electronic goods were a second preference<br>\nsince people's first priority was buying prime merchandise such<br>\nas furniture.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of weak demand, the prices of electronic goods has<br>\nremained steady in the capital for several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The price of a Toshiba Bomba Quatro 21 inch television is Rp<br>\n1,750,000 each, and the Toshiba 14 inch television is sold for Rp<br>\n925,000.<\/p>\n<p>Polytron 29 inch television is sold for Rp 3,650,000, and<br>\nPolytron Mega Power mini compo is sold for Rp 575,000.
