YOGYAKARTA - Students from SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta have\ncaptured attention with an electric drag bike they built that can reach\n134.5 km\/h.<\/p>\n
The electric motorbike, named Mugatech, was developed as a student\npractical project at the school and serves as a platform for\nhigh-performance electric vehicle innovation that is still being\nrefined.<\/p>\n
Hindro Harimawan, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at\nSMK Muhammadiyah 3 Yogyakarta, said the idea for the electric motorbike\nstemmed from a desire to create fuel-free vehicle innovation.<\/p>\n
\u201cElectric motors are about innovation. We wanted to make\ntransportation tools commonly used by the public without using fossil\nfuels. With oil reserves dwindling and prices rising, we aimed to build\na motorbike that can match the speed of conventional fuel-powered ones,\u201d\nhe said on 28 May 2026.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe presented the idea to the students, who responded positively,\nespecially since they are passionate about motorcycles \u2013 modifying,\nrepairing, and customising them. Their enthusiasm led us to proceed with\nthe project,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Hindro explained that the drag race concept was chosen because it is\nmore challenging than everyday electric motorcycles, which are already\ncommon.<\/p>\n
\u201cSince everyday electric motorcycles are already widespread \u2013 even\nelectric bicycles exist \u2013 creating such a vehicle would be unremarkable.\nWe wanted something with high speed to make it exciting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The school allocated approximately Rp 30 million for the project,\nwith the majority spent on electrical components such as batteries,\nelectric motors, and controllers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe cost is around Rp 30 million. The expensive parts are the\nelectrical components, like batteries, the electric motor, and the\ncontroller,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt came from the school budget. Each department was offered funding\nopportunities. Last year, no department had submitted a proposal, so we\napplied and thankfully were approved by the principal, allowing us to\nproceed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
During development, students went through multiple testing and\nrevision stages. Hindro noted the project followed a trial-and-error\napproach.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a trial-and-error process. We built the frame first, then\nassembled the motor. After completion, we found the motor was too long\nand lacked aesthetics, so it had to be cut and welded again. It wasn\u2019t a\none-off process; there was a lot of research involved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
