Election-related riots need anticipation<\/p>\n
Indonesian Military Chief Gen. Endriartono Sutarto
\nacknowledged that -- based on intelligence data -- there were
\npolitical groups planning to sabotage the 2004 elections.<\/p>\n
The groups, according to the general, target the relevant laws
\nand regulations on the elections in such a way that they will not
\nbe improperly upheld or enforced.<\/p>\n
If the intelligence is correct, there will be very serious
\nchaos that could impact seriously on the nation. The act of
\nsabotage would inevitably evoke anger among the supporters of
\nother political parties.<\/p>\n
Chaos could lead to the destabilization of social and economic
\nstructures, and it would take Indonesians a long time to recover.<\/p>\n
We cannot take such a possibility for granted. There must be
\nanticipation. The military and police must be able to keep
\neverything in order, including safeguarding the routes for the
\nsupply of staple foods.<\/p>\n
The government must also secure businesses and the people
