Election monitoring<\/p>\n
In reference to a Jan. 7, 1999's news story in The Jakarta
\nPost under the headline \"Universities band together to form poll
\nwatchdog,\" the final part of which refers Dr. T. Mulya Lubis as \"a
\nfounder of the Independent Election Monitoring Committee,\" allow
\nme to give the following response:<\/p>\n
First, Mr. T. Mulya Lubis did not take part in the
\nestablishment of the Independent Committee for Election
\nMonitoring (KIPP Indonesia) in March 1996. In the repressive
\npolitical situation at the time, KIPP Indonesia was set up by 40
\nactivists, non-governmental organizations, student leaders,
\nacademics, lawyers and community figureheads such as Adnan Buyung
\nNasution, Nurcholish Madjid, Goenawan Mohamad, Mulyana W.
\nKusumah, Permadi and others.<\/p>\n
Mr. T. Mulya Lubis was nominated as a member of the National
\nCouncil of KIPP Indonesia in the plenary meeting of the presidium
\nof KIPP Indonesia in October 1998, but the nomination was dropped
\nso as not to conflict with his position as a UNFRP coordinator.<\/p>\n
Second, KIPP Indonesia welcomes the recent establishment of
\nprivate election monitoring institutions. In a relatively open
\npolitical climate, the role of such institutions are important in
\ndeveloping democracy.<\/p>\n
