Election campaign<\/p>\n
All Indonesian people have been feeling the atmosphere and
\nseeing the campaigning activities going on for some time now. It
\nis amazing how big the turnout is for the campaign. One day,
\nJakarta turned green, the next day it was yellow and then was
\nfollowed by a shy red.<\/p>\n
I feel that people understand the importance of the campaign,
\nbecause the election contenders have a chance to \"sell\" their
\nprograms, their ideals and their aspirations. The man in the
\nstreet must be very happy listening to speeches from every party
\ncampaigner who promises to improve living standards of people,
\neradicate corruption and bring about peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n
However, what we see is sometimes frightening. Large convoys
\nof motorcycles making all kinds of noise, drivers wearing no
\nsafety helmets, campaigners sitting on top of trucks and buses
\ndisregarding safety precautions, blocking roads and creating
\ntraffic jams, become daily sights.<\/p>\n
This, I think, is not the right way of running a campaign to
\nwin votes from the people. Instead, they should observe traffic
\nrules and all existing campaign regulations issued by the
\ngovernment. They should try to avoid creating disturbance as much
\nas possible in order to win people's support.<\/p>\n
In fact, the government has been trying hard to keep life as
\nnormal as possible. They try to maintain law and order during the
\ncampaign period, so that everybody can feel safe and businesses
\ncan continue unabated. It is quite evident that government and
\nits law enforcement agencies face trouble, which sometimes
\nresults in physical conflicts and death.<\/p>\n
We may wonder what will happen when these election
\nparticipants come into power. Even now while soliciting people's
\nsupport, without formal power behind them, their actions are
\nuncontrollable and violations are rampant.<\/p>\n
When all campaign regulations are agreed upon and observed by
\nall participants, law and order can surely be maintained. Let us
\nnot complicate matters for the government to establish peace and
\norder. Let us campaign the way a politically mature nation does.<\/p>\n
