Eight shot in Kendal<\/p>\n
KENDAL, Central Java: Eight civilians were shot on Saturday in
\na violent clash between 500 people and Police Mobile Brigade
\n(Brimob) officers guarding a clove factory belonging to PT
\nZanzibar in the district of Patean, Kendal regency.<\/p>\n
Patean District Police Chief Lt. Sutana confirmed the shooting
\non Monday, saying that his men used rubber bullets to quell the
\nmob and that procedures were not violated.<\/p>\n
The violent incident, involving residents from four villages
\nin Patean district was believed to be caused by a
\nmisunderstanding when a Curug Sewu villager named Sugito pulled
\npeanut plants at PT Zanzibar's compound at noon Saturday.<\/p>\n
To Sugito's surprise, a group of Brimob officers arrived, and
\none of them fired a warning shot. "One of them then beat Sugito,"
\na resident claimed.<\/p>\n
"The policemen may have thought Sugito was stealing. They
\ndidn't know that we have a longstanding agreement with the
\ncompany that the empty space belonging to the company could be
\nused by locals for planting," said the resident who asked not to
\nbe named.<\/p>\n
Hours later Sugito, accompanied by around 500 men returned
\nwielding sickles, swords and other sharp weapons.<\/p>\n
The Brimob officers fired their weapons when confronted by the
