Eight questioned for stoning toll booths<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Police questioned eight men yesterday after
\nangry motorcycle taxi (ojek) drivers stoned toll booths and cars
\non the Jati Bening toll road in Bekasi Thursday night.<\/p>\n
At least four toll booths were smashed and the windows of a
\npolice car shattered before riot police took control.<\/p>\n
Witnesses told police that dozens of ojek drivers became angry
\naround 7 p.m. when toll road security officers prevented public
\nbuses from dropping passengers off near the exit gate.<\/p>\n
The drivers, who usually wait for passengers near the gate,
\nwere unable to pick up passengers from the buses.<\/p>\n
The drivers then became involved in a brawl with toll road
\nsecurity officers, who they outnumbered.<\/p>\n
When security officers and toll officials ran away, the
\ndrivers began stoning the toll booths and passing cars.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said dozens of
\npeople, including residents in the area and becak (pedicab)
\ndrivers, joined in the stoning.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of cars were able to pass the toll gate without
\npaying. Motorists fled the site in panic and a few vehicles
\nsustained minor damage.<\/p>\n
Police brought the riot under control by 10 p.m.<\/p>\n
The head of Cikampek toll road, I.D. Panjaitan, said his
\nofficials managed to salvage money from the toll booths.<\/p>\n
He said the state-owned toll road operator PT Jasa Marga would
\nsoon repair the damage caused by the riot.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said that only two of the people arrested were ojek
\ndrivers.<\/p>\n
He called on people not to be influenced by others wanting to
