Eight months sought for soldier<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Military prosecutor Capt. Agus Hari Suprapto
\ndemanded on Wednesday that the Yogyakarta Military Tribunal
\nsentence police First Brig. Hendro Purnomo to eight months in
\njail for shooting a student when attempting to disperse a student
\nbrawl last year.<\/p>\n
In his indictment Agus told the trial, presided by Col. Anas
\nChaniago that police Mobile Brigade member Purnomo was guilty of
\nnegligence in performing his duties.<\/p>\n
\"An eight-month jail term, minus the period of his arrest, is
\nreasonable punishment for him,\" prosecutor Agus said, adding that
\nthe defendant had violated Article 360 of the Criminal Code on
\ncausing bodily harm due to negligence.<\/p>\n
The defendant had been in military police custody for seven
\nmonths and 15 days.<\/p>\n
Hendro was one of the police officers deployed to quell a
\nschool brawl on Sept. 27. Hendro allegedly opened fire to
\ndisperse students from Yogyakarta's Muhammadiyah I senior high
\nschool.<\/p>\n
One of the students was shot in the waist, the prosecutor
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Kahfi Hasran survived after a rubber bullet was taken out of
\nhis body. The rubber bullet was confirmed as coming from Hendro's
\nrifle.\"<\/p>\n
The trial was adjourned until next month when judges will read
\nthe verdict.(44)<\/p>",
