Eight injured in Dayak rally<\/p>\n
PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: At least eight people were injured
\nwhen police opened fire on some 300 Dayaks who attacked the
\nprovincial legislature on Monday.<\/p>\n
Seven protesters suffered gunshot wounds and a policeman was
\nstabbed in the clash sparked by the tribesmen's protest over the
\nunfair ethnic composition of local representatives in the
\nPeople's Consultative Assembly (MPR).<\/p>\n
It was the second protest on the issue in less than a week.
\nNobody was hurt in a protest on Oct. 6 in which a mob of local
\nresidents vandalized the legislative building to protest the
\nelection of three Malays, a Dayak and a Chinese-Indonesian to the
\nMPR.<\/p>\n
Legislators subsequently changed the lineup by transferring to
\nthe Dayak community one of the seats allocated for a Malay
\nrepresentative.<\/p>\n
But the Dayaks renewed their protest after learning that the
\nfive representatives named earlier were already in Jakarta to
\nattend the MPR General Session.<\/p>\n
Police officers appeared taken aback when the protesters were
\nnot cowed by the release of tear gas. Dozens of people were
