        "content": "<p>A caustic acid attack targeted Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of\nKontraS, as he drove through the Salemba area of central Jakarta. Police\nhave moved swiftly to investigate the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The attack occurred at approximately 23.00 on Thursday 12 March,\nshortly after Yunus had completed a podcast at the Law Aid Foundation\n(YLBHI) office titled \u201cRemilitarisation and Judicial Review in\nIndonesia\u201d. CCTV footage showed two motorcycle riders throwing the acid\nat Yunus. Following the attack, he was taken to hospital for medical\ntreatment and was found to have sustained burns covering 24 per cent of\nhis body, affecting his chest, face, and hands.<\/p>\n<p>Dimas Bagus Arya, Coordinator of KontraS\u2019s Working Body,\ncharacterised the acid attack as an attempt to silence critical voices\nin society, particularly human rights defenders. He called for a\nthorough investigation into both the perpetrators and the motives behind\nthe attack, citing relevant provisions of the 1999 Law on Human Rights,\nthe 2009 Environmental Protection Law, and the 2015 National Human\nRights Commission Regulation on Protection of Human Rights\nDefenders.<\/p>\n<p>National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has given special\nattention to the handling of this case. The investigation is being\nconducted by the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polres Metro\nJakarta Pusat) with support from the Metro Jaya Police Command and the\nNational Police Criminal Investigation Division (Bareskrim).\nInvestigators have gathered CCTV evidence and interviewed at least two\nwitnesses present at the scene; the number of witnesses is expected to\nincrease.<\/p>\n<p>The case is being handled under Police Report Model A Number\n222\/III\/2026, classified as alleged aggravated assault under Article 467\nparagraph (2) and\/or Article 468 paragraph (1) of the 2023 Criminal Law.\nPolice have stated that the investigation will be conducted\nprofessionally and using scientific crime investigation methods.<\/p>\n<p>KontraS Coordinator Dimas Bagus Arya noted that in the 28 years since\nKontraS was established, the organisation has repeatedly faced\nintimidation and terror.
