Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Google is one of the world’s most popular
search engines. However, not every country allows unrestricted access to
the US technology company’s services. A number of countries block or
restrict Google services because of government policies, the development
of local platforms or international sanctions.

Several countries limit access to Google, either comprehensively or
only for certain services. The following are eight countries that
restrict Google services, according to the Times of India.

China

China is one of the countries with the strictest controls on access
to foreign internet services. Its government blocks several Google
services, including Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube.

As alternatives, people in China use local digital services,
including Baidu, the country’s leading search engine.

North Korea

Google is not freely accessible in North Korea. The country has a
domestic intranet called Kwangmyong, which is separate from the global
internet.

This system leaves local people with very limited access to
information and digital services from abroad.

Iran

Iran also restricts several Google services. Although restrictions on
some platforms, including WhatsApp and Google Play, were reportedly
lifted at certain times, Gmail and YouTube remain subject to
restrictions.

This shows that access to digital services in Iran can vary depending
on the platform and the policies in force.

Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is among the countries that restrict access to various
international internet services. Some Google services, such as Gmail and
YouTube, are reportedly unavailable or restricted.

As a result, people face limitations in using a number of digital
platforms commonly used in other countries.

Russia

Unlike in China and North Korea, Google remains accessible in Russia.
However, the company faces pressure over demands to remove content and
regulations imposed by the government.

Russia also has a popular local search engine, Yandex, which is one
of the main choices for people seeking information online.

South Korea

South Korea is not among the countries that block Google entirely.
Nevertheless, people have strong local search-engine alternatives, such
as Naver and Daum.

Naver is often called ‘Korea’s Google’ because of its popularity
among local internet users.

Cuba

The Cuban government restricts access to some Google services.
Consequently, people in the country do not have the same access to
Google’s digital services as users in many other countries.

These restrictions are one factor affecting the use of international
digital platforms in Cuba.

Syria

Several Google services are also restricted in Syria. Google Play and
Google Ads are among the services that cannot be accessed in the
country.

The situation is linked to US and international sanctions that affect
the availability of foreign technology companies’ services.

Restrictions on Google Do Not Always Mean a Total Ban

The list shows that policies towards Google vary from country to
country. Some countries block most Google services, while others
continue to allow access but impose restrictions on particular services
or content.

Alongside government policies, the presence of local platforms also
influences people’s choices of digital services. Baidu in China and
Yandex in Russia are examples of local search engines that play an
important role in their domestic markets.
",
