A dermatologist has warned that volcanic ash settling on the skin can cause dryness, stinging, itching and irritant dermatitis. The advisory follows the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, with residents urged to avoid direct contact with ash and to rinse affected skin with clean running water rather than rubbing it.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Skin and venereology specialist Dr. Arini Astasari
Widodo, SM, SpDVE, has explained that when volcanic ash settles on the
skin, it can cause dryness, a stinging or burning sensation, itching,
and redness or irritant dermatitis.

“In most people, brief contact with ash does not cause serious skin
problems,” Arini said when contacted by ANTARA in Jakarta on Monday.

A member of the Indonesian Society of Dermatology, Venereology and
Aesthetics (Perdoski), she noted that people who already have sensitive
skin, atopic dermatitis or eczema, rosacea, or a compromised skin
barrier — for instance after laser treatment or peeling — need to be
more careful, as their skin is more prone to irritation.

“Ash particles can also be abrasive. That is why one should avoid
rubbing or wiping ash that is still dry on the surface of the skin, as
the friction can actually increase irritation,” said the Harvard
University graduate.

If possible, first remove clothing that has been heavily exposed to
ash. Rinse the skin with clean running water so that the particles are
lifted off without much friction.

She also recommended bathing with cool or lukewarm water and a gentle
cleanser, and avoiding scrubs, rough sponges, or rubbing the skin too
hard.

If the face becomes irritated, it is advisable to temporarily reduce
the use of active ingredients that could make the skin even more
sensitive, such as retinoids, AHA/BHA, peels or scrubs, until the skin
calms down.

Arini further stressed that when it comes to prevention, physical
protection is more important than medication. People can use a simple
moisturiser, free of fragrance, that supports the skin barrier — for
example, one containing ceramides, glycerin or other humectants and
emollients.

She also noted that the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters
of the Sunda Strait, and the spread of its volcanic ash, should be
heeded. The public has been urged not to panic, although in terms of
skin health, volcanic ash is different from ordinary everyday dust.

Arini explained that volcanic ash consists of very fine rock and
mineral particles, some of which have abrasive surfaces, and fresh ash
can also carry acidic components.

“That is why the most important principle is to reduce direct contact
with ash, especially when ash concentrations in the air are high. The
impact on the respiratory tract and eyes is generally the main concern,
but the skin can also become irritated,” she added.
",
