Educational program for cart drivers<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: Mitra Mandiri Foundation, an affiliate of the United
\nStates-based United Way International in Indonesia, is sponsoring
\nan educational program for school-aged horse cart drivers in
\nMajalaya, West Java, near here.<\/p>\n
Conducted by local non-governmental organization Institute of
\nCommunity Development Information and Research (LEIMA), the
\nproject comprises 30 children who will undergo a one-year
\neducational program. Upon completion, the participants will have
\ncompleted the equivalent of a nine-year elementary education.<\/p>\n
LEIMA will involve educational experts, community leaders and
\nprofessionals as instructors.<\/p>\n
At the opening ceremony for the program on Saturday, Mitra
\nMandiri chairwoman Ati W. Soekandar said their was a need to
\ndevelop a sense of compassion among the more fortunate for less
\nfortunate children.<\/p>\n
Local community leaders and government officials attended the
\nceremony.<\/p>\n
Established three years ago, the foundation currently is
\nconducting five other social projects, including an educational
\nprogram for children in the Jakarta slum area of Senen, the
\nproduction of 180 talking book titles for blind children across
\nthe country and a development program to help handicapped
\nchildren acquire life skills in the East Nusa Tenggara towns of
\nRuteng and Kupang.<\/p>",
