        "content": "<p>Jakarta \u2014 Indonesia\u2019s Minister of Primary and Secondary Education\n(Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu\u2019ti has assured that the introduction of coding\nand artificial intelligence (AI) subjects are safe and will support\nstudent teaching and learning activities, including for children under\n16 years old.<\/p>\n<p>The Education Minister emphasised that the two new subjects aim to\nequip students with proficiency in using coding and AI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe purpose of coding and AI in schools is firstly to develop\nskills\u2014the ability to use coding and AI. Secondly, it is to support\nlearning activities. So it is not completely open-ended,\u201d said Minister\nAbdul Mu\u2019ti following the signing of a joint ministerial decree on\nguidelines for AI use in education in Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He further explained that instruction in both subjects will\nincorporate ethical guidelines, particularly regarding AI usage.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry has also supplemented both subjects with teaching\nmaterials developed by the Ministry of Education team to ensure that\ncoding and AI instruction supports student learning activities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore, we can guarantee that what is being taught is the safe\nuse of coding and AI that supports learning,\u201d stated Minister Abdul\nMu\u2019ti.<\/p>\n<p>The coding and AI subjects are now available as elective subjects in\nschools prepared to implement them, being taught progressively in Year 5\nprimary schools, junior secondary schools, and senior secondary schools\nand vocational schools.<\/p>\n<p>The government has simultaneously introduced social media\nrestrictions for children under 16 through the Communications and\nDigital Ministry Regulation Number 9 of 2026. This regulation implements\nGovernment Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the governance of\nelectronic systems for child protection (PP Tunas).<\/p>\n<p>The implementation of social media restrictions for children under 16\nwill apply to YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X and\nsimilar platforms, coming into effect progressively from 28 March\n2026.<\/p>",
