Education in Indonesia<\/p>\n

Geographically, Indonesia has a lot of natural resources waiting
\nto be found and used. Statistically, Indonesia has a lot of human
\nresources with great potential to develop Indonesia from many
\nsectors. Universally, Indonesia has very great potential to
\nrecover and become a strong nation.<\/p>\n
But all this potential and factors of development need quality
\ndevelopers: human [beings], the people of Indonesia. The quality
\nof the people of Indonesia is usually seen in their education,
\nwhich is (almost) the most important factor for someone [to make
\ntheir mark] in the community.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's system of education is becoming weirder and more
\ncomplicated as time passes. This is [caused] by the fact that
\neducation is becoming so hard to get that not everyone can get
\nit, and by how complicated the system is. A clear example is the
\nnew selection system for senior high school students and the
\nUjian National [national examination] that has become a new kind
\nof terror for some students.<\/p>\n
Why is education getting harder to get? For some or many
\npeople the answer would be its cost. It is true that education is
\nbecoming more expensive. It would be no problem for those who
\nhave a lot of money, but we and of course the government should
\nsee that not all people of Indonesia are wealthy.<\/p>\n
Nowadays, people scream and suffer from the rise in the cost
\nof fuel. The regime of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono promises that
\nthis rise will be followed by a better quality of sanitation,
\neconomic development in remote areas and the list goes on. But we
\nshouldn't forget that education is one of those sectors that will
\nbe developed from the budget of Rp 5.6 billion from the fuel
\nsubsidy, as promised by this regime.<\/p>\n
These statistics are based on surveys made by the BPS [Central
\nStatistics Agency] in 2003, but the autonomy of the provinces and
\nschools causes these [figures] to be [inaccurate] by the fact
\nthat the cost of education rises as time goes by.<\/p>\n
Other factors lacking in educational development come from the
\ngovernment and maybe from the students themselves. The system
\napplied in the selection of new senior high school students and
\nthe national examination is so complicated. For example, the
\nexamination system is not clear and not efficient, and is always
\nchanging.<\/p>\n
This year, the national examination will be held twice. In the
\nfirst [phase], the examination is held as usual. But students who
\nget a bad score and can't go on to senior high school will be
\ngiven another chance in the second phase. This second phase is
\nnot only for students with a bad score, but also for those who
\ncannot participate in the first phase for some reason, which may
\ninclude their unreadiness [to take the exam].<\/p>\n
Another small example of the inefficient system of the
\nnational examination is the way students work on their [exam]. A
\ncomputerized checking system sounds great and handy, but for some
\nstudents it is not. Almost half of their time working on an
\nexamination paper will be spent blackening the answer circles. It
\nis not impossible that some examinations will be left half
\n[blank] because the student has run out of time. This unfortunate
\nsituation will not fulfill the purpose of the national
\nexamination, which is to select students with quality to continue
\ntheir studies to the next level.<\/p>\n
Why? Because it is possible that the student knows the answer,
\nbut he\/she does not have time to blacken all the circles.<\/p>\n
Also in the new senior high school student selection, do not
\nprioritize students from schools in the same province, but open
\nthe chance for other students from other provinces to receive a
\nquality education.<\/p>\n
It is understandable that these systems were made to make
\nIndonesia better. But it is useless if it doesn't work
\nefficiently. So a revision is required.<\/p>",
