'Educate children not to be corrupt'<\/p>\n
Indonesia has long been known as one of the world's most corrupt
\ncountries. The latest survey conducted by Transparency
\nInternational Indonesia (TII) names the capital as the most
\ncorrupt city in the country. The Jakarta Post asked residents for
\ntheir opinions as to what needed to be done to eradicate
\ncorruption.<\/p>\n
Endang Srihadi, 28, is a researcher at the Indonesian
\nInstitute, Central Jakarta. He lives in Depok:<\/p>\n
Jakarta will never be free of corruption. It is a city which
\nis built on the public sector, which relies on \"easy money\".<\/p>\n
As we all know from Tanjung Priok Port, smuggling is no news
\nat all in this town.<\/p>\n
Entrepreneurs who want to minimize their tax payments will
\nmore often than not bribe the officials. That, of course,
\nencourages the officials to engage in more corruption.<\/p>\n
The same thing happens when people want to renew their
\ndriver's licenses or obtain permits to open a business.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement is a must, in my view. The administration has
\nto ensure transparency under the watchful eyes of the public and
\nnon-governmental organizations.<\/p>\n
Bilal, 25, works at a human resources firm in Mega Kuningan,

Corruption? It is common everywhere in the world, even in the
\nUS. It's just a matter of the intensity, however, that makes
\nJakarta the most corrupt place in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The survey makes me sad, actually, because I was born and earn
\na living here in the capital.<\/p>\n
I think the measures taken so far to overcome the problem by
\npunishing the corruptors have been far from enough.<\/p>\n
We have to prevent the younger generation from become
\ncontaminated by the mentality. We can start at the earliest stage
\nin school.<\/p>\n
Everyone should be involved in the effort to eradicate
\ncorruption. We must not make any distinctions.<\/p>\n
