~Editorial: RIGHTS BODY'S PROFESSIONALISM<\/p>\n
Waging a war and protecting human rights at the same time are
\ntwo difficult works -- difficult because they are by nature
\ncontradictory.<\/p>\n
The government has decided to launch a military operation in
\nAceh province. This decision is full of risks in terms of human
\nrights protection, the focus of the country's National Commission
\non Human Rights.<\/p>\n
Clashes of interests between the military and the human rights
\nbody are unavoidable because the two have different purposes.<\/p>\n
The commission's professionalism is being questioned by the
\nmilitary. The root of the problem is the commission's findings on
\nextra-judicial killings, arbitrary arrests and sexual harassment
\nduring the military operation.<\/p>\n
The war in Aceh will continue and the number of victims would
\nincrease. Thus the human rights body's professionalism and
\ncredibility are vital in putting the military operation in check.<\/p>\n
Professionalism and credibility however are not enough if the
\ntwo factors are based only on verbal reports.<\/p>\n
