Deputy Speaker of the People\u2019s Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy\nSoeparno has expressed appreciation for President Prabowo Subianto\u2019s\nspeech at the 2026 MPR Annual Session. In his address, Prabowo gave\nspecial attention to the development of a green economy, the carbon\neconomy, and the strengthening of carbon trading through the Carbon Unit\nRegistry System (SRUK) and the carbon economic value exchange.<\/p>\n
During the Joint Annual Session of the DPR, MPR and DPD, Prabowo also\nemphasised that the government continues to drive the green economy\nthrough the development of a carbon economic value ecosystem. \u201cWe are\nalso driving the green economy. The Carbon Unit Registry System and the\ncarbon economic value exchange have been established and are\noperational, adopting global carbon standards,\u201d Prabowo stated on\nSaturday (15\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
Eddy assessed the statement as a strong political commitment. He\nstressed that the carbon economy must be positioned as part of the\nnational economic growth strategy, not merely as an instrument to\nachieve emission reduction targets. \u201cI greatly appreciate the\nPresident\u2019s attention to the carbon economy. This aligns with what I\nhave been advocating, that the carbon economy must become one of\nIndonesia\u2019s new economic pillars. Decarbonisation should be viewed\nbroadly as an environmental issue as well as an opportunity to create\ninvestment, state revenue, jobs, and new sources of economic growth,\u201d\nEddy said.<\/p>\n
The University of Indonesia political science doctorate holder\ndescribed the presence of the SRUK as a strategic step. He noted that\nthe system is necessary to ensure that every carbon unit traded has\nclear recording, verification, and traceability. \u201cSRUK is the foundation\nof trust in Indonesia\u2019s carbon market. If we want to attract investment\nand make carbon a credible economic commodity, then data integrity,\ntransparency, traceability, and international standards must be the main\nprinciples,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
Eddy added that the strengthening of the SRUK must go hand in hand\nwith regulatory certainty, carbon project readiness, and\ncross-ministerial and institutional coordination. According to him, many\ncarbon projects are already in the technical, financial, and\ninstitutional preparation stages, so Indonesia must ensure these\nprojects have a clear pathway to carbon monetisation and integration\ninto the national system.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Eddy explained that Indonesia possesses significant\ncapital to build a carbon economy. The country\u2019s wealth of forests,\npeatlands, mangroves, renewable energy potential, waste management, and\ntechnologies such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) can all be part of\na low-carbon economic ecosystem. \u201cThe President\u2019s message today must be\nfollowed up with concrete action. With our vast carbon potential, its\neconomic value must be utilised optimally.
