Economic crisis affects students<\/p>\n
MALANG, East Java: With the economic crisis far from over,
\nmore than 35 percent of the students at state-run Brawijaya
\nUniversity here are relying on scholarships to continue their
\nstudies, the university rector, Eka Afnan Troena, said.<\/p>\n
Eka said on Wednesday that the students, about 8,000,
\nreceived scholarships from various sources, including the central
\nbank and state-owned postal company PT Pos Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"We have sought every avenue to find donors for needy but
\nbrilliant students. We have also exempted 280 of the students
\nfrom school fees,\" Eka told Antara.<\/p>\n
The university also allows some students to pay their school
\nfees in installments over six months.<\/p>\n
The protracted recession is also affecting younger students,
\nwith the mayoralty's education and culture office expecting up to
\nhalf of the students below university age to face the possibility
\nof dropping out.<\/p>\n
\"It's possible that this figure will increase in the wake of
\nmassive layoffs and the early retirement of workers here,\" the
\nhead of the office, Sofwan, said.<\/p>",
