Economic competitiveness<\/p>\n
Our attention should focus on the Indonesian economy in
\nrelation to the global economy, the GATT agreement and the era of
\ntrade liberalization within the framework of APEC.<\/p>\n
To face this situation, as President Soeharto suggested,
\nIndonesia must make the necessary preparations as early as
\npossible. Our economy must be efficient and our export products
\nmust be able to compete in the world market. Products for
\ndomestic consumption must also be able to compete with similar
\nimported goods.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, however, we note with concern that we tend to
\nbe trapped into a high cost economy. This makes it difficult for
\nIndonesian products to compete on the international market.
\nTextile and garment industries, for example, won't be able to
\ncompete with similar products from China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka,
\nPakistan, Mexico and some African countries. There is also due
\nconcern among the industries over the rumor that imported raw
\nmaterials -- synthetic fibers and cotton -- will be managed by a
\nmonopoly or at least highly regulated.<\/p>\n
We want to remind all parties that economic globalization is
\nunavoidable and we therefore must be prepared this eventuality.<\/p>\n
