        "content": "<p>Economic census to start next month<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) will<br>\nstart a nation-wide census early next month to map out the<br>\nweaknesses and strengths of the country's business activities.<\/p>\n<p>BPS chairman Sugito said here yesterday that the census would<br>\ncover almost all business sectors, including mining activities,<br>\npower generation, manufacturing, construction, retailers and<br>\nwholesalers.<\/p>\n<p>Service activities related to transportation, finance,<br>\naccommodation and restaurants will also be targets of the census.<\/p>\n<p>\"All licensed business units, except those engaged in<br>\nagriculture, will be surveyed,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sugito said that small-scale companies without business<br>\nlicenses will also be surveyed, but randomly.<\/p>\n<p>BPS will deploy around 86,000 surveyors comprised of workers,<br>\nteachers and students, to carry out the census, the second<br>\neconomic survey to be conducted by the agency to date.<\/p>\n<p>Data will be collected in all parts of the country in December<br>\nand January in cooperation with provincial administrations. The<br>\noutcome of the survey will be published in February 1997.<\/p>\n<p>\"President Soeharto is expected to launch the census on<br>\nThursday,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The agency will need at least Rp 200 billion (US$87.2 million)<br>\nin state funds to finance the nation-wide census.<\/p>\n<p>Sugito said that the government has earmarked around Rp 63.4<br>\nbillion for data collection in the current state budget, which<br>\nends in March.<\/p>\n<p>\"We expect the remainder to be made available in the following<br>\nfiscal years,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinating Minister for Industry and Trade Hartarto has<br>\nappealed to business players to support the census and to give<br>\ncorrect data to BPS's surveyors.<\/p>\n<p>Sugito described the census as a breakthrough for the<br>\ncountry's economic players, which at present still lack adequate<br>\nbusiness data in backing up their operations.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that data to be obtained from the census would be<br>\nused to formulate a business information system for the country.<\/p>\n<p>\"The census will be important for mapping out business<br>\npotential and weaknesses,\" he said.(hen)<\/p>",
