A deadly Ebola outbreak is spreading through the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and into Uganda, causing significant casualties. Medical professionals warn that widespread misinformation and public distrust are severely hindering containment and life-saving medical interventions.

The deadly Ebola outbreak continues to spread in the eastern region
of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), triggering global concern as
medical workers struggle on the front lines. As of Monday (1/6/2026),
government data and the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) recorded 321 confirmed cases with 48 deaths. The outbreak has also
crossed the border into Uganda, with at least 15 confirmed cases and one
death.

However, doctors have revealed that the greatest challenge is not
merely the virus itself, but an epidemic of fear and misinformation
spreading through the community. Dr Aymar Akilimali, an infectious
disease specialist from the Medical Research Circle, stated that public
distrust of healthcare facilities is making containment efforts far more
complex.

According to Dr Akilimalli, scientific tools such as surveillance and
rapid diagnosis can control the virus, but human factors often act as a
barrier. “Patients may delay seeking medical care, contacts become
difficult to track, and health teams face limited access to communities
due to fear and mistrust,” he told ABC News.

In some areas, residents do not even believe the Ebola virus is real.
Akilimali recounted incidents where citizens entered treatment centres
to cause chaos or attempted to steal the bodies of relatives who had
died from Ebola. This situation is exacerbated by the region’s ongoing
conflict, poverty, and fragile healthcare systems.

Dr Amédée Prosper Djiguimdé, UNICEF’s health lead in the DRC,
confirmed that misinformation is hindering efforts to decontaminate and
isolate patients. To combat this, UNICEF is now engaging community
leaders, religious figures, and women’s groups to rebuild trust.

“We are listening to the concerns of residents and spreading messages
about Ebola through trusted local structures, rather than relying solely
on top-down communication,” explained Djiguimdé. Logistical challenges,
such as damaged infrastructure and limited mobility for field teams,
also remain major obstacles.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has warned that official
figures are likely much lower than the reality on the ground, given that
only about 20% of contacts are currently being successfully tracked.
Despite heavy psychological pressure, medical personnel remain committed
to their duties, even while wearing full personal protective equipment
(PPE) in extreme heat.

Positive news has emerged from the international diplomatic stage. On
Tuesday (2/6/2026), US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the
United States will re-engage with the global vaccine alliance, Gavi.
This move marks the return of US funding support, which had been halted
by the previous administration, providing new hope for vaccine
availability in the affected regions.

While the situation remains critical, Dr Akilimali is optimistic that
the response this time is better than previous outbreaks due to the
faster mobilisation of international equipment and stronger surveillance
strategies. “Regardless of the severity of this disease, local health
professionals remain fully committed to protecting their communities,”
he concluded.
",
