East Timorese blamed for crop thefts<\/p>\n
ATAMBUA, East Nusa Tenggara: People in East Nusa Tenggara have
\ncomplained about East Timorese citizens who allegedly frequently
\nsneak into the province to steal or burn their crops.<\/p>\n
"Maybe it is because the economic condition of people along
\nEast Timor's border is quite alarming, so they are forced to
\nsteal food stuffs from our farmland," Vincentius B. Loe, a
\ncommunity figure from Belu regency in West Timor, said on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
He said he received complaints from local people about the
\nthefts of their rice, corn, cassava, banana and other crops by
\nthe East Timorese.<\/p>\n
NTT border security taskforce commander Col. Joko Setyono
\nconfirmed the reports.<\/p>\n
The latest incident took place last week when farmers from
\nLakmas village in West Tasifeto subdistrict, Belu, reported that
\ntheir crops, such as mangoes, coconuts, candlenuts and corn were
\nburned by East Timorese, he said.<\/p>\n
Joko admitted the security taskforce was unable to prevent
\nborder crossing from East Timor due to a lack of personnel.
