East Timor suspects to be named within two days<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Attorney General Marzuki Darusman admitted
\nthat President Abdurrahman Wahid had recommended naming some two-
\nstar generals as suspects in the East Timor human rights
\nviolation case.<\/p>\n
When asked by journalists on Tuesday, whether Abdurrahman had
\nonly given a recommendation to name two-star generals as
\nsuspects, Marzuki replied: "Yes, let's just wait till tomorrow.
\nBut yes, there are some high-ranking officials on the list."<\/p>\n
After attending a ministerial meeting on political, social and
\nsecurity affairs, Marzuki said that the investigation team will
\nhave completed the dossiers within the next day or two.<\/p>\n
"The East Timor case is the responsibility of my office and my
\noffice alone. Within one or two days, the entire East Timor
\ninvestigation will have been concluded by the team. We will see
\nthen," Marzuki said.<\/p>\n
The Attorney General had promised to announce 30 names as
\nsuspects in the East Timor case this week. The case dossiers will
\nthen be submitted to the court for further legal action.<\/p>\n
However, it is still unclear whether four-star Gen. (ret)
\nWiranto, the Indonesian Military (TNI) chief at the time when the
\nviolence erupted in East Timor, is among them.<\/p>\n
Of 33 alleged suspects according to an earlier report by an
\ninquiry team established by the National Commission on Human
\nRights (Komnas HAM), two are four-star generals, namely Wiranto
\nand Gen. (ret) Feisal Tanjung, the former coordinating minister
\nfor political affairs and security.<\/p>\n
The announcement of the suspects was originally scheduled for
\nAug. 23 but the Attorney General's Office postponed it in order
\nto seek stronger legal grounds after a recent constitutional
\namendment which provides protection against retroactive charges.<\/p>\n
"Just wait until tomorrow. We will all know about the results
\ntomorrow," Marzuki added. (dja)<\/p>",
