East Timor leaders say integration issue is final<\/p>\n
DILI, East Timor (JP): East Timorese leaders told a visiting
\nsenior official of the U.S. State Department yesterday that the
\nintegration of East Timor into Indonesia was final and should no
\nlonger be disputed by the international community.<\/p>\n
The deputy chief of the East Timor legislative council, Maria
\nQuintao, said after meeting with John Shattuck, Assistant
\nSecretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and
\nLabor, that the international community should disbelieve the
\npropaganda still being made by opponents of the integration.<\/p>\n
Shattuck arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday for a nine-day visit to
\nIndonesia. U.S. embassy officials in Jakarta described his trip
\nas \"part of the on-going dialog between Indonesia and the U.S.\"<\/p>\n
The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor is a new
\noffice, created under the administration of President Bill
\nClinton out of two previously separate State Department bureaus:
\nthe bureau of human rights and the bureau of labor.<\/p>\n
The State Department, in a report early this year, accused
\nIndonesia of continued human rights violations, particularly in
\nEast Timor. The report said the United States had not seen any
\nprogress in accounting for the persons missing after a bloody
\nincident in Dili, the capital of East Timor, in 1991.<\/p>\n
During his three-day stay in Dili, Shattuck is scheduled to
\nmeet with regional military commander, Col. Kiki Syahnakri, and
\nwith Governor Abilio Jose Osorio Soares. He will also meet with
\nBishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo, the Roman Catholic Church
\nleader in East Timor.<\/p>\n
According to Quintao, Shattuck has praised the development
\nachieved in East Timor since the integration.<\/p>\n
On the question of human rights, Quintao said that Shattuck
\nhad said that, although at times there were differences between
\nWashington and Jakarta, they still shared the same goal of
\npreserving human rights throughout the world.<\/p>\n
Separately, the head of the East Timor legislative council,
\nAntonio Freitas Parada, said that no country, particularly among
\ndeveloping countries, was free from human rights abuses.<\/p>\n
He told the Post that abuses were caused by a lack of
\nawareness about these matters on the part of both the people and
\nleaders.<\/p>\n
Antonio proposed that Washington extend aid to promote
\neducation in this field.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Jakarta yesterday, U.S. Senator Charles Robb of
\nthe senate's sub-committee for East Asia and the Pacific arrived
\nfor a three-day stay as part of a regional tour which has so far
\ntaken him to South Korea and Myanmar.<\/p>\n
Embassy officials said the trip was part of his work as a
\nmember of the senate sub-committee.<\/p>\n
Shattuck's and Senator Robb's arrival here comes shortly after
\nan Indonesian military inquiry which found officers to have been
\nat fault in the Jan. 12 killing of civilians in East Timor.
